Issues

My experiences in America's space program, military, and world-class medical centers have taught me that Americans have the skills and resources to accomplish almost any goal. What we need today is a different approach in Washington. Over the next few months I will be releasing video statements on many different subjects, as well as detailed one-page "Policy Perspectives" that explain how I approach each issue. Later in the campaign I will be publishing more detailed papers that propose concrete solutions.

National Security Levy on Oil

The National Security Levy will
  • reduce the military commitment to securing our oil supply
  • provide a strong incentive for efficiency
  • ensure the economic viability of new and alternative energy supplies
  • help reduce carbon emissions and improve the environment
  • encourage the development of new technologies for energy, which would also create new jobs

Iraq

Jay Buckey served in the Air Force Reserve, and he knows that our military is well trained, and extremely capable. Yet he believes that the Bush administration has failed to set the right strategic goals. We need a new strategy that addresses both our short-term and long-term interests.

Global Trade

As a scientist and researcher, Jay Buckey has seen how U.S.-based research has been transformed into new American businesses that sell products worldwide. This has long been a source of economic growth. But the risks involved in global trade (outsourcing, closed businesses, wage competition) are hitting our middle class hard and the benefits are not reaching everyone.

Health Care

Despite the enormous wealth of our nation and the highest quality healthcare available anywhere, many of our citizens are not receiving any care and many more are not receiving good care. As a physician, Jay has the experience to be a strong advocate for health care reform.

Family Planning and Sexuality

As a physician, Jay worked in a public hospital where sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancies were common among teens and young adults. As a senator, Jay would bring a medical approach to issues of sexuality and family planning, emphasizing the need for better education and preventive health care. Dr. Buckey is committed to keeping abortion legal, but working to reduce the abortion rate.

Technology and Innovation

Over the course of his career, Jay has seen research projects grow into great discoveries and new companies. Technology and innovation have been major strengths for our nation and have allowed us to enjoy high standards of living. But today we are not making the investments we need to remain leaders, and leadership in the global economy is being threatened. We must make changes now and chart a different course.
